Maintenance and Cleaning — Schedules and Methods in Canada
Maintenance & Cleaning — Schedules & Methods (Canada)
1) Suggested maintenance schedule (quick chart)
| Item | Monthly | Quarterly | Seasonal/Winter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic cones & posts | Wipe clean; check collars/retro bands | Rotate faded units; replace cracked bases | Rinse salt; store indoors if possible |
| Barriers & chains | Tighten fasteners; wash | Inspect feet/clamps; touch-up scratches | Check ballast; add sandbags for storms |
| Reflective signs/boards | Wash with mild soap; check reflectivity | Replace delaminated or chalked faces | Inspect posts/anchors after freeze–thaw |
| Convex mirrors | Clean lens; re-aim; tighten bracket | Replace hazy/scratched lenses | De-ice/anti-fog at exterior doors |
| Solar lamps | Wipe panels; test flash/steady-burn | Load-test battery; check seals | Clear snow from panels; verify autonomy |
| Cable protectors | Remove debris; inspect hinges | Replace cracked lids or torn ramps | Dry before storage; avoid ice buildup |
| Wheel stops & guards | Check anchors & migration | Replace reflectors; re-torque bolts | Mark for plows; rinse salt |
2) Approved cleaners & what to avoid
- OK on plastics (PVC/PE/PU): mild dish soap, diluted all-purpose, isopropyl ≤70%.
- OK on metals: pH-neutral cleaners; rinse and dry to prevent rust.
- Reflective sheeting: water + mild soap + microfiber only.
- Avoid: acetone, lacquer thinner, gasoline, strong alkali/acid — they haze plastics and eat adhesives.
- Pressure washers: keep nozzle ≥50 cm away; avoid edges of decals/sheeting.
3) Cones, posts & belts — wash, retro & bases
- Wash body with soap/water; use soft brush on textured bases.
- Inspect retroreflective collars; replace peeled, torn or dull bands.
- Check post springs and belt cassettes; retract smoothly, no fray.
- UV care: rotate units to balance fade; store out of direct sun when idle.
4) Barriers & chains — hardware and colour care
- Tighten bolts/clamps; replace cracked feet or broken hooks.
- Clean plastic chain; replace chalked, brittle or faded lengths.
- Add reflective panels or solar lamps for night visibility.
5) Reflective signs/boards — don’t ruin the sheeting
- Use microfiber + mild soap only; no abrasive pads.
- If sheeting is chalked or crazed, replace — cleaning won’t restore brightness.
- Keep hardware tight; avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.
6) Convex mirrors — clarity & anti-fog tips
- Clean acrylic/PC with mild soap; no ammonia or solvents.
- Re-aim quarterly to keep conflict paths in view; tighten lock nuts.
- For exterior doors, consider hooded or anti-fog lenses.
7) Solar lamps — panels, batteries & IP seals
- Wipe panels monthly; salt film kills charging efficiency.
- Check gaskets and cable glands for cracks; re-seal if needed.
- Cold weather: prefer LiFePO4; load-test and replace weak packs before winter.
8) Parking gear — wheel stops & guards
- Re-torque anchors after first freeze–thaw; replace bent plates.
- Swap damaged reflectors; repaint concrete curbs when spalled.
- Mark edges with posts/flags so plows don’t shear them off.
9) Storage, transport & recordkeeping (EN/FR)
- Store plastics clean, dry, and shaded; avoid stacking that warps cones or signs.
- Use dedicated bins for small hardware; label replacement parts.
- FR/EN: Tenir un registre des inspections / Keep a simple inspection log (date, item, action).
10) Replacement criteria & related pages
- Replace when reflective brightness drops, plastic cracks, bases split, lamps won’t hold charge, or anchors no longer secure.
- Use these deep-dives for product-specific care:
Important Legal/Compliance Note (Canada)
This guide is informational, not legal advice. Workplace inspection/maintenance practices must comply with provincial Occupational Health & Safety requirements and your internal safety program. Where manufacturer instructions or standards specify cleaning methods, replacement thresholds, or inspection intervals, those documents prevail. Consult your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for site-specific obligations.
