Safety Bollards & Guards in Canada
Safety Bollards & Guards — Types, Impact Levels & Installation (Canada)
1) What do safety bollards & guards protect?
- Doorways, hydrants, gas/electrical/EV equipment, loading docks.
- Pedestrian routes & storefronts from vehicle encroachment.
- Warehouse racking, corners, conveyors, and machines from forklifts.
2) Steel vs flexible bollards — which to pick?
Steel (fixed) — maximum stopping power; for critical assets and perimeters.
- Can be impact-rated when engineered with proper footings.
- Works with sleeves/covers to avoid repainting.
Flexible/PU — rebound after glancing blows; protects floors & vehicles.
- Great inside warehouses & tight parking aisles.
- Not a substitute for true anti-ram bollards.
3) Mounting styles: in-ground, bolt-down, removable.
Style | Pros | Watch-outs | Best for |
---|---|---|---|
In-ground (embedded) | Strongest; can be engineered-rated | Requires core drilling/excavation | Perimeter, door & utility protection |
Bolt-down (surface plate) | Fast install; relocatable | Only as strong as slab & anchors | Warehouses, light vehicle areas |
Removable/locking core | Access control for driveways, docks | Needs receiver sleeve/lock maintenance | Occasional vehicle access zones |
4) Sizing: pipe diameter, wall thickness & height.
- Common diameters: 4″ (114 mm), 6″ (168 mm), 8″ (219 mm).
- Wall thickness: 3.0–6.4 mm typical; thicker for high-risk areas.
- Height: 900–1200 mm above grade for vehicles; 1200+ mm for storefronts.
- Bigger pipe ≠ safer if the footing/anchors are weak.
5) Footings & anchors — do it right.
In-ground: typical cores 300–450 mm Ø, 600–900+ mm deep with concrete; deeper in frost zones. Tie into rebar where specified.
Backfill/finish flush with grade; cap to prevent water ingress.
Bolt-down: use wedge or adhesive anchors sized per load; observe edge distances & slab thickness.
On suspended slabs, confirm structural capacity before drilling.
6) Visibility: sleeves, colour & reflective bands (EN/FR).
- Use high-visibility sleeves (yellow/black) to avoid repainting steel.
- Add reflective bands at driver eye height for night garages.
- Pair with reflective signage and convex mirrors near turns.
- FR/EN: Bandes réfléchissantes recommandées en zone sombre / Reflective bands recommended in low-light areas.
7) Warehouse guards: rack, corner & machine protection.
- Rack guards/upright protectors: absorb forklift bumps without bending uprights.
- Corner/column guards: shield building edges; coordinate with wall/corner guards.
- Machine/roller guards: bolt-down barriers around conveyors and panels.
8) Outdoor/winter performance — rust & salt.
- Choose galvanized steel or quality powder-coat + sleeve in salt zones.
- Seal caps; avoid standing water inside pipes (freeze split risk).
- Use stainless fasteners and re-torque after first freeze–thaw cycle.
9) Inspection & replacement checklist.
- Quarterly: check loosened anchors, cracked slabs, bent pipes, sleeve wear.
- After impact: tag out, inspect footing/anchors, and replace if deformed.
- Repaint exposed steel or replace sleeves showing UV chalking.
10) Bundles & related products.
- Reflective boards for right-of-way
- Traffic posts & delineators for lanes
- Convex mirrors at blind corners
- Wall & corner guards to protect surfaces
- Wheel stoppers to control overrun
- Solar warning lamps for night visibility
Important Legal/Compliance Note (Canada)
This page is informational and not legal advice. Bollards and guards used on public or private property may be subject to local building codes, fire codes, accessibility rules (e.g., AODA, CSA B651), and municipal by-laws. Vehicle impact–rated systems require engineered design and installation per certified drawings. Where a code/standard specifies dimensions, anchors, or visibility, that document prevails. Consult your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and a qualified engineer for high-risk locations.
